The story starts like this....
One day in 1977, at Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a boy and a girl were introduced at lunch. Even though he was a Junior and she was a Sophomore, a romance blossomed and they quickly became inseparable. He walked her to class, he drove her to school and in 1978, he asked her to Prom. Never had there been a more romantic evening! (Including the stop by Burger King on the way home!)
Then, in August 1978, he gave her a gift that would begin a lifelong obsession for her. He gave her a stuffed frog that she named Danny (after Danny Zuko in Grease). But less than 2 months later, the unthinkable happened- they were separated when her family moved 2500 miles away to Oregon. She cried and cried and cried while he made plans to take a Greyhound Bus all the way to see her. It was a wonderful Christmas as the young couple spent precious time together.
But the distance was too great and the young couple lost touch even though they both thought of the other all the time. They grew up, they married others and started families. Their lives were busy and they thought fondly of the other, always wondering where he/she ended up and what he/she was doing.
One day, she received an email addressed to a name she hadn't heard in 30 years- "Are you Patricia 'Frog' Adams?" She quickly closed the email and opened it back sure that she must have read it wrong. And her heart skipped a beat as she scanned to the end to read the signature "Your friend, Ben". For months and months, they traded polite emails, catching up on each others' lives.
A year after the first email, they met in New Orleans for Valentine's Day and the years fell away. They spent hours talking, staring at each other and beginning to understand that the love they felt as teenagers had never gone away. Over the next few months, they spent hours each evening talking on the phone. (Thank goodness AT&T lets their customers talk to each other for free!!!) They built a relationship, a friendship, a new love even though they were still separated by 2500 miles.
In May 2008, 30 years after they lost touch, Ben moved to Oregon to be with Trish. And the beginning of their happily ever after (and the next chapter of this blog) began on March 6, 2009 when they married in Sulphur, Louisiana. Stay tuned!
