Ben's Birthday Weekend '09- Oregon Zoo

We make it to the Zoo with hundreds of other eager visitors on this perfectly beautiful day. First up is the Mountain Goats. They were so pretty and a peaceful way to begin this tour. I have picked out the pictures I liked best. I hope you will enjoy them too! This next exhibit is a window full of people. Just kidding...they are looking through another side of the bear exhibit.
This is what they were looking at. This black bear was very interested in all of us. A man using hand gestures was able to get the bear to sit, to stand tall on his hind legs and even to turn in a circle. I wondered if the bear's trainers taught him tricks for food or if he figured it out on his own!
This was a really cool bridge leading through the bear forest.
The second bridge was a covered bridge. It was cool too!
When we left the covered bridge, we came upon these magnificent birds. These Bald Eagles had a large group of viewers. They are so pretty!
The polar bears are up next. One was sleeping and the other walking around. He was huge!
Meet the newest member of the elephant herd: Samudra! He is so very cute and the females are very protective of him. He turned one on August 23rd and he weighs almost 1300 pounds. So adorable!!
Another angle. Don't you just want to squeeze him?!
Papa lion woke up, looked around and promptly continued his cat nap! What a great place to nap in the sun.
The lions were the beginning of the newest exhibit: Predators of the Serengeti. They did a really good job with the whole area. It is just beautiful. In the next area as one cheetah who was sleeping and another who had just finished his nap and had plenty of energy. He was walking back and forth and all of a sudden, he spotted the little girl standing next to me. He came running toward the window and stopped right in front of her. She jumped backwards with a little scream of terror and I swear I saw him lick his lips as he walked away.
I love zebras- I find their stripes fascinating.
In the African Rainforest, there was several areas of birds. Here are just a few of our favorites.
This next exhibit fascinated both of us and yet creeped me out. I know that vultures only eat dead animals but the fact that he is staring at that poor defenseless little deer is freaky! Don't you agree?
Happy Birthday darling! Another year older but look on the bright side... the vulture wasn't staring at you!

Ben's Birthday Weekend '09, MAX

We talk about MAX all the time so we thought we would show you about it. Ben uses it to commute to work. His work provides him with a yearly pass. I usually ride on the weekends when we are going downtown. It is much cheaper than gas and paying to park! And it's always an adventure to us. We love people watching and I'm always hoping the fare inspectors will ride with us. Ben gets checked all the time but I never have been. Maybe they only work bankers' hours??
The last picture is on one of the new trains. You can sit in the back and see all the way through.

The Robertson Tunnel was created through the West Hills and has a station at the Oregon Zoo. It is very chilly down there so have a sweater if you are going to have to wait long for the train. There are interesting facts on the walls including core samples taken when the tunnel was built.

I have uploaded a video Ben took of the train coming into the tunnel. It is about 25 seconds into the video before you can see the train but you can hear it coming much sooner. It's cool!

Ben's Birthday Weekend '09

Friday, September 25th- we've taken the day off and we get to sleep in! My alarm went off at 8:45 (I had an H1N1 conference call) so I snuck out of bed so Ben could keep sleeping. An hour and a half later, I started cooking so Ben could have breakfast in bed. Yes, family, I can cook. I never said I couldn't...I just don't have to anymore! Anyway, about one in the afternoon, we finally headed to the post office, ran a few errands and ended up at our destination in time for dinner- Black Angus Steakhouse in Vancouver. We started with drinks- Spiced Rum and Coke for Ben and of course a lemon drop for me. The food was wonderful and they brought Ben a warm chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream-SO GOOD!

Traffic was crazy on the way home so we missed our movie. That's okay though...we went to bed early...it's a birthday weekend!

Saturday, September 26th- up early as we are going to The Agency to watch the LSU football. But first a stop at Jamba Juice for breakfast. YUMMY!!MAX takes us downtown where we watch the game with new friends and old ones. It's great that The Agency has made a space available for our group. They even fly an LSU flag! What a great game! I like the ones that are close (even when they aren't supposed to be) and that was a close one.

We jumped back on MAX for our next destination...

Beaverton Parade Sept 09

For many years, I took my children to watch the Beaverton Parade. During one of those parades, we met and fell for Pink Martini and their amazing music. About 12 years ago, I convinced a small group of coworkers that we should participate not just watch. And every year since then, our numbers have grown until this year we had more than 125 participants in our group alone! How exciting- and that was on a day that rained and rained. But how much fun we had "Dancing in the Streets!"

The link above shows that the Grand Marshall was Mariel Zagunis. It seems like only yesterday when she was just a little girl running around school. Time sure does fly!

Ben's holding the umbrella for our friend Lynnettee while she fills the bags full of candy. This parade is known for participants passing out candy to the spectators. It takes a lot of candy to cover a two mile parade!

Sister Rita , my boss, is in the middle. She's waving! Sister Theresa Lan is to her left. STL takes care of me. She brings me fresh figs and tomatoes from the garden. Yum, yum!

Janet, Candice and Rebecca- smiles in spite of the rain!

Janet and her husband Frank...funny umbrella!

While we aren't quite ready to make it a bead throwing parade, I did manage to get fleur de lis prints on our shirts. It's a start!

Tigers vs. Commodores

This year, Portland's official LSU football watching location is The Agency. It's a sports lounge across the street from PGE Park. Since it's on the MAX line, we jumped on the train and "people watched" all the way downtown.
We met new friends, heard great stories of how we are all connected to LSU and how we got to Oregon and watched some football. We shared some funny memories of last week's game and experiences at Husky Stadium. It was such a fun time, we can't wait until next week!

Tigers Vs. Huskies

For those of you who have followed our blog from the beginning, this entry will be closer to those first entries. For the rest of you, please indulge me a bit. Based on the title of this entry, one would expect this entry to be about football and it is, but not really, well kinda, but it’s a whole lot more. When I was a little girl, one of my favorite memories was sitting with my grandpa on Saturday nights listening to LSU football games. Sometimes my great uncles would have been fishing and there would be a big fish fry or a crawfish boil. Each dinner included my great Aunt Ouida’s toast. You never knew what kind of bread she had leftover but you could always count on it being burnt! We didn’t care- we loved getting together and being with family! But no matter what we ate, the dishes would be cleared so we could settle in before the game started.

Funny, I don’t remember ever watching a game with Grandpa but I remember him once saying that listening to the game was just like being there only better because they told you the things you missed. I often wonder what he would think of the technology today that lets coaches challenge plays!

As we moved to Oregon, we switched to watching games when they were broadcast, they were rare but bittersweet as my grandpa passed away a few years after we migrated west. As I married and had children, any time LSU came on, everyone knew not to disturb me during the game. Occasionally a child would join me for a short time, but most often they just laughed as I yelled commands to the players on the screen. Throughout the years, I learned that LSU fans in the NW were non-existent or at least very quiet about being fans. I never understood that 'cuz Tigers ROAR but whatever!

When Ben returned to Oregon for the first time after 30 years, the agenda that long weekend was to watch LSU play in the National Championship game. It cemented my love for him. I know it may seem silly but for 30 years, I had no one to share my beloved games with. The fact that he not only enjoyed LSU football but that he travelled 2500 miles to watch the most important game I had ever watched them play made me love him all the more.

Over the last two years, LSU games have been posted on our shared calendar (thanks Google) with the time and channel posted. They are a priority in our household just as they were so long ago at grandpa’s house. As soon as the 2009-10 schedule was posted, we knew we were going to the season’s opening game in Washington. We called season ticket holders to see if they would be heading north. We registered on all kinds of lists watching for tickets to be released. We learned of the Portland/Vancouver chapter of LSU alum and joined their group. We attended a couple of their events and discovered that there are hundreds of LSU fans surrounding us! Through the group, we got tickets and planned our trip north to Husky Stadium. And that is where this entry turns to being about football. I attended my first LSU football game with my husband of 182 days. I got to yell and scream and cheer with 20,000 of my new found friends. I got to attend my first tailgating party and boy was that an event! I was even kissed by a stranger but as Ben’s cousin Cathy said “There are no strangers wearing purple and gold...only friends you haven't met yet.” It was a day I will never forget and one I will forever by grateful to Ben for making happen for us.
Life is good! And the fact that the Tigers won is just icing on the cake! (BTW- we have also acquired tickets to the last regular season game as well. We will be in Tiger Stadium in November when they play Arkansas. I can hardly wait.)

Tigers Vs. Huskies, cont.

We've gone through the car wash, added the flags, packed the car and we are ready to geaux! 193 miles later... Husky Stadium...now to find a parking spot!

After walking for what seemed like miles and miles, we found tiger tracks!

Enjoying being with LSU fans, hearing new sounds of home all around us.

In a sea of purple and gold, you could differientate which fans were which by the chants "Tiger Bait, Tiger Bait!" Extreme Fans- definition: those willing to travel 2500 miles and brave cold rain to view their beloved TIGERS!

Tiger Pimps! Tiger Band

Beginning scoreboard
Warming up. Geaux Tigers! Team Captains... According to the Husky fans sitting next to us, how do you know which team to cheer for if they are both in the same color?? Silly girls!
Running out before the game starts. Listen to the TIGERS ROAR through the stadium!

Ready to score!

Final Score!

Happy Tiger Fans!

BTW- less than a mile or two from our hotel was not one but two Microsoft buildings. Ben was so excited!
