It's hard to name a post when you don't know where it is going so this one just has a date. Like my sister Della, last week brought a lot of emotional crap to this blogger and I was looking forward to the weekend for so many reasons. I laughed hysterically as she listed the contents of her purse. If you haven't read it, you must, it's hilarious!
Sunday was our Open House at school and I knew I was going to miss one if not both of the NFL playoff games but Ben promised that he would text me updates as they happened (isn't technology great?!) Della says she doesn't know how she missed the football fanatic gene our Grandpa passed down. Grandpa was everything LSU but for me it was my Dad who instilled the love of a good NFL football game. He is the one who introduced me to Joe Namath, Roger Staubach and Archie Manning (who was the best quarterback the Saints had until Drew Brees and who made a name for himself long before he was Peyton and Eli's dad!) My Dad taught me that if I wanted to do something, I could do it whether it was to change a tire or quote football stats, replace a transmission or ... there were no limits. My Dad taught me that nothing could stop me except my own attitude and for that I am grateful.
We had a great Open House with lots of visitors and additions to our wait lists. Everyone was happy and enthusiastic. Fortunately it was short and sweet and that allowed me to get home in the middle of the first quarter of what would turn out to be the most exciting NFC I have ever seen. I managed to contain myself and call my Mom at halftime. Happy Birthday Mom!
As you all know by now, the Saints are headed to the Super Bowl in Miami. That they are playing against the Colts lead by Peyton Manning is ironic to me. That they will beat the Colts (again...lead by Peyton Manning) is funny to me. Life is too short. Take a moment today to tell the ones you love how much they mean to you. Tell them how they have helped you to be the person you are today. Let them know how grateful you are for their influence in your life. Stop focusing on the negative and do what you can to make the world a better place for those around you. It will make you a better person too!

The Great Crabbing Accident

It all started when I chose style over practicality and I put these shoes on this morning. Aren't the pink ones so much cuter than boots? Ok, the frogs were a close second, but really! So we get to the dock and begin to haul everything out of the car. It's a little breezy but we're looking forward to a big crab dinner later this evening. The traps are set and we are pulling in tons of crabs when the sky turned black and disaster struck.Sixty mile per hour winds blew huge waves of ocean over the pier. They knocked Noelle over and I tripped over her. As I was sliding across the pier, Steve realized that I was headed straight to the tub of freshly caught crabs. He lunged for the tub barely saving the crabs as I was knocked into the railing when another huge wave hit the pier. Ben reached out and grabbed my wrist, squeezing tight as I headed into the ocean. He and Steve jerked me back to safety slamming my wrist on the railing on the way back onto the pier. Immediately, my wrist began to swell and I burst into tears as I realized my beloved pink pumps had been lost in the sea. Tragically, they began to sink and I'm sure some octopus is very happily wearing my shoes right now.
At least we had this to look forward to after we left urgent care with x-rays and a splint on my left hand. The doctor says she doesn't think it's broken. We'll know better in about a week.
Now isn't that story much more entertaining than I tripped and fell, slamming my hand into a glass door?!

New Year's Crabbing '10

New Year's Day found us up early and on the road to Garibaldi before the sun came up. There are many rules and regulations for crabbing in Oregon. One is they have to be a certain size. Another is they have to be male. It's the right sex, is he big enough to keep? Yeah, our first crab at 9:15 am. It's gonna be a great day! Steve and Ben were baiting the traps as Noelle and I tried to stay warm!
Look Ma, no hands!
Trust the Gorton's fisherman!
We're having a great time. It stopped raining and the wind has dropped to only 60 mph! This is so much fun. It's 11 am and no more keepers yet but that's ok!
My husband...the manly fisherman! We soon learned that the closer one stood to the building, the less the impact from the wind. It really was a fun day with great company. I like pulling the pots up...it's that time of anticipation as you wait to see if anything is in there. We did learn that we need to invest in good rain gear and gloves. That will make crabbing in Oregon a much more pleasant experience.
Due to an unfortunate accident, our trip was cut shorter than we anticipated. Noelle and Steve finished up the crabbing for us and met us back at our house for cooking. They brought four crabs with them, yeah!!
Waiting for a nice warm bath...
Don't be scared little crab...
Now it's time for your ice bath!
Thanks Steve and Noelle for introducing us to the wonderful world of crabbing. We'll be better prepared as we look forward to our next trip!
