New Year's Crabbing '10

New Year's Day found us up early and on the road to Garibaldi before the sun came up. There are many rules and regulations for crabbing in Oregon. One is they have to be a certain size. Another is they have to be male. It's the right sex, is he big enough to keep? Yeah, our first crab at 9:15 am. It's gonna be a great day! Steve and Ben were baiting the traps as Noelle and I tried to stay warm!
Look Ma, no hands!
Trust the Gorton's fisherman!
We're having a great time. It stopped raining and the wind has dropped to only 60 mph! This is so much fun. It's 11 am and no more keepers yet but that's ok!
My husband...the manly fisherman! We soon learned that the closer one stood to the building, the less the impact from the wind. It really was a fun day with great company. I like pulling the pots up...it's that time of anticipation as you wait to see if anything is in there. We did learn that we need to invest in good rain gear and gloves. That will make crabbing in Oregon a much more pleasant experience.
Due to an unfortunate accident, our trip was cut shorter than we anticipated. Noelle and Steve finished up the crabbing for us and met us back at our house for cooking. They brought four crabs with them, yeah!!
Waiting for a nice warm bath...
Don't be scared little crab...
Now it's time for your ice bath!
Thanks Steve and Noelle for introducing us to the wonderful world of crabbing. We'll be better prepared as we look forward to our next trip!
