Ben's Birthday 2010
Posted by Ben and Trish RousselSeptember 25, 1960...it was a very good day. The day my wonderful husband was born. We had plans for the day. A full day of deep sea fishing was what he really wanted to do. That was pretty easy. We did some research, tried to figure out the best place to go, the best fish to catch and the best way to proceed. But we had to postpone his birthday trip as duty called. Which reminds me...due to a new policy, I have to make the following statement... This is a personal blog. The opinions expressed here represent my own (or Ben's) and not those of my employer. So there! So we started out the day at school- a homecoming celebration of epic proportions. We took lots of really cute pictures but I can't really show them to you. My dear friend Janet and her daughter stopped to wish Ben a happy birthday!
I got to help pass out free t-shirts to the kiddos! We enjoyed a yummy hot dog lunch and beautiful weather.
Ben swapped "stone" stories with our friend Frank.
We stayed for the first part of the football game but it was time to continue Ben's birthday extravaganza...

A Stone Update
Posted by Ben and Trish RousselIt's been a heck of a few days, 22 days to be exact! This update is my perspective of the events that occurred and I will try to be as accurate as possible. On August 28th, Ben was diagnosed with a kidney stone in his right kidney and one that had begun the journey from the left kidney into the ureter. {Biology lesson- there is a tube (ureter) that leaves each kidney and dumps into the bladder. Google it if you have no idea what I am talking about, lol!} They sent him home with pain meds and said "pass them"! The next days are a blur. Lots of pain meds and a ton of water for Ben and nothing was working. On Wednesday Sept 8th, Ben woke up very early in the morning in excruciating pain. The meds weren't working so the Advice Nurse sent us to the ER. It seems trivial as I write this but this was so hard for me. I know first hand the pain Ben was feeling. I've had several of those "get me to the hospital, I can't take the pain anymore episodes." It was so hard to watch him in so much pain. They got him hooked up to monitors and IV drugs and sent him for another CT scan. This one showed that there was no movement in the stone in the right kidney and a new one in the bottom of his left. While Ben was in CT, I walked over to the Urology office and gave them a heads up. My doctor was in surgery but they assured me that they would stay posted with Ben's progress in ER.
After consulting, they discharged Ben from ER and he was wheeled over to Urology. Dr. *****, the doctor on call determined that it was necessary to place stents in both ureters in order for the stones to pass. I don't believe this man has ever had a kidney stone because he made the decision that this could be done in the office under local anesthesia even though Ben was already in a lot of pain. After the "procedure" Ben got very sick and he stayed in the recovery area for many hours before he was stable enough to go home again "to pass them."
On Monday the 13th, Ben decided he could go to work. By 9:30 am, I was scrambling to clear my schedule so that I could pick him up from the Max station closest to the doctor's office. We went in to talk to the Advice Nurse face-to-face. "Bud" was great! He took all the background info and said he would go find Dr. ****. We stopped him and said to find Dr. Cutie instead. {I didn't ask my doctor if I could use his name on the blog so he gets to be known by the nickname of my choosing!}

Dr. Cutie took one look at Ben, ordered an x-ray, different meds and added him to the surgery schedule two days later! Tuesday, I spent at work while Ben rested much easier than he had for weeks. Finally time to head to the hospital! Since we left in plenty of time, of course there was no traffic so we got there really early. Valerie helped to get Ben ready and Dr. Cutie came in to go over everything one more time (remove one stone, blast the other). Ninety minutes later, the surgery was supposed to be done and still I waited. By two and a half hours, I was panicked. At three hours, Dr. Cutie came out and I said "you were freaking me out!" He laughed and told me everything was okay. It took much longer than he expected because there were two other stones that were very difficult to access. He used laser lithotripsy for all three of the stones that remained. A little while later, I got to go back and be with Ben. He was hilarious waking up! Some of the things he said, I really can't tell you. That just wouldn't be fair! But he kept asking for pudding so we used it as a bribe for him to keep his eyes open. He did really well and soon it was time to go home.
The last few days have been much nicer. Pain management is much better now. Ben is still sleeping a lot but he can sleep! He goes back to see Dr. Cutie on Monday and hopefully the stents will be removed then. Which means I can go back to writing about parades and birthdays and fun adventures coming up. Thank you to each and every one of you who have prayed for Ben throughout this time.

Pink Martini at the Zoo
Posted by Ben and Trish RousselOn Thursday, August 26th, we went to see Pink Martini at the Zoo. It was Ben's first Zoo concert and the weather was perfect. Not too hot and it was actually sunny! They were wonderful as always. China was pretty in pink...
Thomas and China had an announcement to make...PM has just finished recording their first Christmas album. They debuted one of the songs "Congratulations" and it was wonderful! I can't wait till November!
The sun was starting to set and it was beginning to get cool. Good thing I brought an extra blanket!
Little did we know that this was the last outing we would have for a while. Ben went to Urgent Care on Saturday the 28th with what was later diagnosed as kidney stones in both kidneys. After 11 days of pain, we went back, this time to ER when the pain became unbearable. On Wednesday, September 8th, the second day of school, after being in Emergency all morning, Ben had bilateral stents put in and spent all afternoon on IV drugs before he was finally released. Thursday and Friday were spent in a drug induced haze (him, not me) as I used a spreadsheet to keep track of all his medications. Saturday, we can finally see some improvement thanks to all of your prayers. In a few weeks, he will have to have lithotripsy to blast the stones. Fortunately, I have an amazing urologist who will take over Ben's care (he was in surgery Wednesday and not available). We will keep you posted. We have lots on our September calendar so stay tuned!
After Wedding Gathering
Posted by Ben and Trish RousselSo even though they are in the middle of a major remodel, Noelle and Steve graciously offered their home (and grilling skills) for a get together the day after the wedding. The cousins were having so much fun getting to know each other. I love Landon's shirt!
Allisa was laughing as Dennis and the boys were trading Game boy secrets!
Grammy entertained Hunter and Cooper with bubbles!
Honest Grammy, I really am watering your flowers! Which ones do you want me to water next?
Matt, Danielle and Hunter. What a cute family! {Look behind them to see part of the remodeling. The wall and fireplace have been removed and they are waiting for the new insert to be installed.}
See...what did I tell you before? This is exactly why Della is the photographer not the "photographee"!
Now isn't this a nicer picture? Look how sweet she poses when Mom is around!
Dad and Ashley were deep in conversation.
Do you know why Allisa looks so horrified? This is a yummy meal comprised of steak, grilled oysters, boiled crab and crawfish! She's just spotted the eyes on the crawfish!
Ben peeled the tail and handed it to her to try. She was having none of that!
He told her the next step was to suck the head and make the eyes move. See how she responded to that, lol! Sometimes I feel guilty for not introducing my kids to more seafood but with Ashley allergic to shellfish, it just made more sense not to have it around.
Ainsleigh was willing to try them. Grammy was showing her how to peel the tail to get the meat out.
Love, love, love Korbin's hair. His latest "words of wisdom"- I was sitting by the sliding door and he came pushing his way through. "Outa my way! I gotta poop!" Ya gotta love that kid!
Enjoying some amazing food! So glad Sam, Jane and others of Brady's family could join us. {Look at Hunter's face. As soon as he saw me taking pictures, he started making faces.}
Not sure what Cooper had all over his face- probably more yummy brownie pizza!
Scott and Margie also joined us for this beautiful day of celebration and family time.
Even Tayler and Taylor made an appearance. We teased them that we would all gather together again when they got married.
The wonderful host and hostess- Thanks Steve and Noelle!
Hunter in a box!
Ainsleigh and Della are coloring. I think this is a good cleavage day!
Dad was laughing a second ago. Pull out the camera and he stops, ugh!
Ben and Kyle are trying to sneak 40 winks while the party is still going strong. At least, that is what they want us to think!
I came across this conversation and watched because it was so sweet. Dad said that he was coming to get some fruit and asked if he could sit by her. Ainsleigh said "sure." They talked about her coloring as he picked up fruit and took a bite. She watched him the whole time and he asked her if she would like some pineapple.
She said "yes please!" It was adorable watching him feed her pineapple and her grinning from ear to ear when he did!
Time to say goodbye...Ben told Allisa that she was a good sport about the crawfish and that when Ashley and Brady returned, we would all go out to dinner. Allisa said "to Outback?" Everyone laughed as he agreed!
See you all soon!

An August Wedding
Posted by Ben and Trish RousselKyle fell asleep on the way to the church. That's okay because we got here early to take pictures first. Let the boy sleep. Say cheese, pretty sister! All the boys had new Nikes for the wedding. Ain't that swell?
Thank you Ben for getting this picture. I couldn't see Brady and this is my favorite moment of every wedding- the moment the groom sees the bride. It didn't matter that they had taken pictures together and seen each other before the wedding. It was still there in his eyes...
I don't remember what Father Craig was saying during this time. It was before the readings.
